UK Self-Assessment Deadlines Are Fast Approaching.

If you have not thought about your self-assessment returns, do it now before the rush and before it is too late! Here’s a quick list of things to do now!

TaskDeadline
File a paper tax return31 October 2025
File an online tax return (if you want HMRC to collect tax through your PAYE tax code)30 December 2025
File an online tax return and pay any tax you owe31 January 2026

What You Should Do
Actions to Take
    • File Early: HMRC encourages customers to file their return early to allow time to prepare for paying any tax owed by the 31 January deadline.
    • Check if you need to file: If you are unsure whether you need to complete a tax return, you can use the Self Assessment online tool on GOV.UK to check.
    • De-register for HICBC: If you are only in Self Assessment to pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBC), you may be able to use a new PAYE digital service to pay the charge through your tax code instead. You must call HMRC to de-register before the filing deadline.
    • Prepare for Making Tax Digital (MTD): Sole traders and landlords with a turnover above £50,000 will be required to use MTD for Income Tax from 6 April 2026. If this applies to you, HMRC is urging you to sign up for a testing programme to familiarise yourself with the new service.

Things to Watch Out For
    • Late Penalties: You will be charged a £100 penalty if your tax return is filed late, even if you do not owe any tax. Further penalties will apply if the return is more than 3, 6, and 12 months late.
    • Capital Gains Tax (CGT) Calculation: For disposals of assets on or after 30 October 2024, the Capital Gains Tax rates have changed. The Self Assessment tax return will not automatically calculate the correct amount at the new main rates for the 2024 to 2025 tax year, meaning you will need to pay close attention to this section.
    • Missing the PAYE Deadline: If you want HMRC to collect any tax you owe through your wages or pension (by adjusting your tax code), you must file your return online by 30 December 2025. If you miss this deadline, you will have to pay the tax another way.

If you are unsure about your self-assessment and what to do, then feel free to get in touch, we will be more than happy to help you.
